How Stripe pricing works

Stripe's standard US pricing has no monthly or setup fee: you pay per successful payment. A domestic card payment online costs 2.9% + 30¢. In person through Stripe Terminal it is 2.7% + 5¢, which is why Terminal is much cheaper for small tickets. ACH Direct Debit from a bank account is 0.8%, capped at $5, so it becomes the cheapest option above about $40 and dramatically cheaper on large invoices.

Surcharges are added to the percentage: +1.5% when the card was issued outside the US, +1% when Stripe converts currency, and +0.5% when a card is typed in manually instead of entered by the customer. Optional products add their own percentage on top: Stripe Billing (0.7% of billing volume), Invoicing (0.4% per paid invoice) and Stripe Tax (0.5% where you are registered).

The formulas

Worked examples

A $100 online payment with a US card costs $100 × 2.9% + $0.30 = $3.20. With a card from Europe it costs $4.70 (4.4% + 30¢), and if Stripe also converts the currency it costs $5.70.

To receive exactly $100 from a domestic card payment, charge ($100 + $0.30) ÷ 0.971 = $103.30.

A $25 coffee-shop sale costs 73¢ on Terminal versus $1.03 online. A $1,000 invoice paid by ACH costs only $5 because of the cap, against $29.30 by card.

When Stripe is (and is not) the cheapest

Stripe matches most competitors on domestic online cards and wins clearly on ACH. Square can be cheaper in person once you pass certain volumes, and PayPal costs more when buyers pay with their PayPal wallet. See the full comparison at your volume with the payment processing fee comparison, or check the PayPal fee calculator and Square fee calculator.

Limitations

These are Stripe's standard US prices for US-based accounts. Larger businesses can get custom or interchange-plus pricing. Disputes ($15 each), Instant Payouts (1.5%, minimum 50¢), Radar fraud screening and Connect platform fees are not included. Stripe does not refund processing fees on refunds.

Frequently asked questions

What is Stripe's fee on $100?

$3.20 for a domestic online card payment (2.9% + 30¢), leaving you $96.80. In person with Stripe Terminal it is $2.75.

How much does Stripe charge for international cards?

An extra 1.5% on top of the domestic rate, plus another 1% if Stripe converts the currency. A $100 payment from a foreign card with conversion costs $5.70.

Is ACH cheaper than cards on Stripe?

Yes, for anything above about $40. ACH Direct Debit is 0.8% capped at $5, so a $2,000 payment costs $5 instead of $58.30 by card. ACH takes a few business days to settle.

Does Stripe charge monthly fees?

Not on standard pricing. You pay only per successful transaction, plus usage fees for optional products like Billing, Invoicing or Tax.

Does Stripe return fees when I refund a payment?

No. Stripe keeps the original processing fee when you issue a refund.

Can I pass Stripe fees on to customers?

You can raise prices or use the reverse calculator to set a price that nets your target. Card surcharging is regulated by card networks and some US states, so check the rules before adding a separate fee line.
